Red Flag – My Son’s IEP Meeting (ADHD)

His teacher told me, “I feel like he will always be behind.”

When she said those words, my face stayed calm but my stomach dropped. I sat there and felt something shut inside my chest. I remember nodding slowly while my brain was screaming, ‘That is not my child’s story.’ I went home from that meeting angry, scared, and even more determined to prove them wrong because I knew that wasn’t the truth. My son didn’t have a developmental delay. He had ADHD. He wasn’t failing life — he wasn’t paying attention. We worked with his doctor, adjusted meds, and changed how his school supported him. Now he’s keeping pace with his friends.

Hearing a professional state a child’s future as if it’s carved in stone is dangerous. It robs parents of urgency to find the right supports and it starts a story for the kid that can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you’re sitting in a meeting and someone talks about your child’s potential in absolutes, push back. Ask what they mean by ‘behind.’ Ask what supports or interventions they’re recommending and what timeline they expect.

If they refuse to discuss options, that’s a red flag. Your child’s path isn’t fixed — it’s shaped by assessment, support, medication when needed, and fierce advocacy from the adults who love them.

You know your child better than anyone. Trust that knowledge, demand specifics, and refuse neat, permanent answers about their future.
